Today, personal or self development touches all areas of our lives. It’s ultimate aim is to develop our talents and competencies, so that we can achieve our potential, by amongst other things helping to define values, beliefs and a true understanding of our self. It helps us to become the person we aspire to be and to have the career and lifestyle we desire, by expanding our awareness and helping to develop strategies to realise our dreams.

There are many tools we can use to self develop. Study, mentoring and modelling of others who have already achieved our goals, training and coaching. We already do much of this when we are young without even realising it, as we soak up knowledge and experience from the world around us, from our teachers, our elders and those we look up to.

At the Phoenix Consultancy we break Personal Development down into 3 key stages;

Initially we would help you assess your current position.

  • Where are you today?
  • What influences have you chosen, albeit unconsciously, to accept?
  • What strategies are you employing in the area you wish to develop and of those, which are serving you well and which are not?
  • What is holding you back?

  • Where do you want to be?
  • We would then help you to set your goals as you decide where you want to be.
  • What changes do you want to make in your life?
  • which direction do you wish to take?
  • What specifically do you want to work on?
It may be for example that you have been promoted and need some practical skills to help you in your new role. Perhaps you are struggling with a relationship and you need to find new ways to deal with that –whether at work or at home.

The next step is to help you get what you really want and need. This may involve some additional training and / or one to one sessions. We believe that you have all the resources you need to achieve your goals and we have the tools to guide you.

Contrary to popular belief, Personal Development is not a new idea. In the West, the concept was developed by Aristotle in the fourth century BC, and in the East by Confucius 2 centuries earlier.

Whilst there are some fundamental differences between Eastern and Western philosophy, there are also some striking similarities; Confucius said that if you wish to create order on a large scale, you must start by expanding your own understanding and create order in your personal life, then extend this learning to your family. Aristotle categorised personal development as a method of delivering change, which could ultimately enhance the quality of life. Again, he saw this as a learning process which required time, instruction and experience and began with the individual.

Carl Jung and Alfred Adler, both dissident disciples of Freud, linked personal development to psychology in the late 18th and early 19th century. Adler, who’s most famous concept was the idea of the inferiority complex and who was among the first psychologists to support the idea of feminism, saw that psychology had far wider implications than just therapy. He developed the concepts of lifestyle and self-image, which went on to influence management and the idea of a work-life balance, something which most of us strive to achieve today.
